Identify Your Target Market

When designing your website you should take into consideration the type of people who will visit your site. This is called your target market. This is important because you can then tailor your site to those visitors in order to enhance their visiting experience. This will result in those visitors book marking your site so that they can return time after time.

Things to consider when identifying your target market are:

• What is the usual age of your market

• What kind of knowledge does your market have?

A beginning guitarist would need a different type of site as opposed to an experienced guitarist who would probably be looking for something more. For instance a website for a beginner guitarist would probably offer chord charts that show proper finger placement and where to find notes on different strings. But the experienced guitarist might be looking for modal scales and information on how to use those scales for adlibbing solos.  

Your website design and layout should take into account the characteristics of your targeted market. What is their age? Are they looking for trends and the latest greatest thing or are they just looking for basic information without all the flash? For example, a website that introduces a new mp3 player with simple black text on a white background page will most likely turn prospects away. (They would usually be expecting to find lots of colorful graphics along with an explanation of what the player can do.) So make sure your website design is appropriate for your site's targeted market.

You should also try to use language and terms that your visitors would expect from someone who is knowledgeable about the subject matter covered by your website. This will help to build trust and confidence in your visitors. When properly designed, your site will encourage its visitors to return for further information in the future - more returns means more chances to sell what your website is making available!
