Use Free Downloads To Build A List

"The Money is in the List". The old adage still holds true! If you have a list of targeted prospects to contact when you're marketing a product, you'll be more successful and spend less resources by marketing it to your existing list of targeted prospects.

An easy way to build up a targeted list of prospects that are truly interested in what you have to offer is by providing a free relevant product to download on your website. In exchange for the product, your prospect needs to provide their name and e-mail address. For example, let's take a look at  apple.com. Prior to your downloading the free iTunes and QuickTime software from their site, they request you to fill in a form with your name and e-mail address so that they can send you information on software updates AND offers on songs that you can purchase from their subsidiary company - iTunes!

For your purposes, it is not necessary to offer a full-feature software like iTunes. Rather, you can attract prospects just as effectively by offering a quality free report, a free e-book or audio report, etc. Just remember to ensure that your downloadable gift offers enough value for the prospect to be willing to give you their name and e-mail address to get it.

A word of caution, quickly and haphazardly creating a simple download page and putting a link to it on your website won't be enough to attract qualified prospects. You'll need to do some research in order for your lead-generating mechanism (or "squeeze page") to work well for you.

First of all, you must place your download gift and e-mail capture form prominently on your website. Better yet, create a separate page for it and link to that page from every other page on your website. Once this is completed, it will be very easy for your visitors to find the download page. When they do visit it, Some will sign up for your free offering and will then be converted into your prospect!

Additionally, you may want to point out the benefits of obtaining your gift on your squeeze page. Highlight the values of the gift, and explain why your visitors should download it. Don't think that just because you're offering a free downloadable gift that everyone will take you up on your offer. In order to have them sign-up as one of your prospects, it's important to show your visitors why they should download your gift.
